At the Vegas “Connections” event, I led a session with Don Jones called “Server 2008 and Vista: If not now, when?” In that session, I misspoke and said that Server Core supported all File Server roles. That’s not quite true—yet. Server Core supports the file services role, DFS-N, and DFS-R. It does not—yet—support File Server Resource Manager (FSRM), which means you can’t manage quotas and file screens on Server Core.
However, that changes in Windows Server 2008 R2. Among other great capabilities that R2 will introduce, .NET will be added to Server Core, enabling ASP.NET web pages, PowerShell (v2) and FSRM!
